Orthodox Medicine and the New Wellness Movement 

Your first step to finding true health and a quality of life is to seek out true knowledge in the field of health. To attain a quality of life one needs stable data. A good starting point is to define the two main schools of healing, for each should have its proper place in your life,.

There are two schools of healing, “Orthodox Medicine” and the “Wellness Movement,” sometimes called Alternative or Integrative Health. Neither is exclusively right. Both schools have good and bad doctors. Orthodox Medicine has good and bad medications, good and bad procedures, and the Wellness Movement has good and bad adjustments and supplements.

People are different and we all respond differently to healing. We even respond differently at different times. For this reason neither approach is the one and only.  There are times when  it is right to seek an orthodox solution, and but for most of the time it is possible to save money and a gain better control of your health by finding a doctor who practices Orthodox and Alternative or Integrative Medicine.  The Wellness Movement has many effective solutions especially in the area of prevention.

These are relevant questions: When do you want to see a doctor, when a chiropractor, when a therapist, and when a nutritionist?  Also when is it right to go to the Emergency room?

What is Orthodox Medicine

Orthodox medicine (or conventional medicine) is founded on western principles, and uses therapies such as drug therapy, surgery, and psychiatry.  It seeks to alleviate pain and discomfort, and it traditionally treats symptoms rather than causes. Over the last century orthodox medicine has codified an arsenal of new effective breakthroughs like cataract surgery, non invasive laser surgery and DNA testing.

This is not necessarily a wrong solution, nor is it always the right solution, for it  is dependent on how far the bad condition of the body has advanced.  Natural healers who throw out surgery, chemo or laser therapy are as far off base as the orthodox cut-happy Surgeon who sees $$$$ in the slightest malaise.

I have a friend given back surgery who was actually doing well with chiropractic. She now still has her pain but she can no longer go to a chiropractor. She used to work but now she cannot. Another friend suffered from incontinence which can be handled by exercise and or internal adjustments.  She was given a net to lift up her organs. This petroleum net lasted less than six months until the body reacted adversely to the foreign object. She too has suffered.  If you have any doubts at all about a procedure always seek a second opinion.

It is important to correctly judge when a condition has advanced beyond the point where the body can heal itself; so it is always wise to do the blood work, do the x-rays and to find out as much information as you can before getting surgery or taking toxic medicines. It is never a good idea to go ahead blindly.  It is your body and you will have to live with the consequences if what has been done is wrong.

In conclusion Orthodox medicine sees a dangerous situation in the body, and correctly bypasses its natural healing properties. In a truly dangerous situation like an accident this is the way to go.

What is Alternative Medicine?
This is a natural approach that has been growing as more new knowledge comes in from the east (via the Internet) or is resurrected from a time before orthodox medicine gained its funding and its acceptance.

Wellness is based on Balance
Alternate medicine includes old folk remedies and many herbal cures.  The basic premise on which alternative therapies operate is that sickness is often self limiting; for the body can heal itself if its balance or communication is restored.   In a little while the pain or discomfort goes away, leaving in its wake a sense of well-being. Most alternate therapies seek to help the body to heal itself – Alternate medicine looks at the fact that many “symptoms” are detox-crises – that any bad condition can be monitored and that it is often short lived. So why take medicine which is toxic or undergo unnecessary surgery when it is going to fix itself with rest and good eating. When not feeling well, it could be that the body is simply ridding itself of toxins.

Chinese medicine is one example of an alternative medical system. Chinese medicine has a variety of therapies, including Acupuncture, and Chinese Herbal medicine. Alternative medicine also includes Naturopathy, Chiropractic & Homeopathy. Naturopathic medicine grew out of alternative healing systems of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but traces its philosophical roots to Ancient Greece (circa 400 BC).

A newcomer to the Wellness Industry is Alkaline Water.. The Ph of the blood has a great deal to do with your health and the body’s ability to fight off infection. Eating well takes time to organize, time and to prepare the foods and eating organic is expensive. You  may have the best of intentions but it may just not be practical to make it actually happen. About water; not all water is the same.  The basic premise of water therapy is that the body is 70% water. It operates on the premise that if properly hydrated the body is better able to shed accumulated toxins. This is a proven concept.

The Wellness Movement focuses on a healthy balance in the  body, but also a balance of mind, body and spirit.   How you live, how you eat, and how you think and love are all important and to organize your life so that what you do results in an overall feeling of well being.

The trick is for the doctor (but even more important for you) to know when to use what remedy.  As we evolve we may find that there are healers who are well educated in, and able to effectively practice both Orthodox and Integrative Medicine,  as did Hippocrates.
